Here’s some love from Criterion. Through Monday, all of the arthouse label’s titles streaming on Hulu Plus are free to everyone.
There are more than 800 titles now on Hulu Plus, including quite a few that never made it to home video release.
The catch: The movies come with ads, which Hulu Plus paid subscribers rarely see.
Criterion says the long weekend promo is a celebration of the home video company’s two-year anniversary with Hulu Plus. Forgive the vast number of Netflix film lovers not joining in that celebration, as that also marks the beginning of the end of Criterion films on Netflix.
The Criterion cache pretty much remains the only reason to pay for films on Hulu Plus at $8 a month. Still, it’s worth it: Many fine top-drawer Criterion films can be streamed there — along with a lot of Asian titles of not much interest to U.S. audiences who aren’t down with Zatoichi.
Finding Criterion’s films can be a bit of a challenge on Hulu Plus. Run a search on the online home page. For viewing via home entertainment devices such as Blu-ray players and game consoles, look for the movie studios category and click on C.
